Women Leaders in Sports Media

The Cronkite School’s Women Leaders in Sports Media are high-achieving women changing the future of sports media.

The Cronkite School’s Women Leaders in Sports Media program is a live-learn community of like-minded, high-achieving women pursuing the undergraduate Sports Journalism degree. Eligible students are incoming first-time, first-year students admitted to the Sports Journalism bachelor of arts degree program with a high school course competency GPA of 3.50 or higher at the time of applying for admission (view the first-year admission requirements page to learn how the course competency GPA is calculated).

As a part of the program, students live in a dedicated housing cluster within the Gordon Commons residential hall with other Women Leaders in Sports Media members, and enjoy these benefits:

  • Early move-in to Gordon Commons housing
  • Pre-semester kick-off event in August
  • Paid membership to the Cronkite chapter of the Association of Women in Sports Media
  • Exclusive programming throughout the year, including guest speakers and special outings
  • T-shirt

After their first year, members continue to enjoy (and create!) special programming, and engage with new members and alumni to strengthen the WLSM network. Meanwhile, members pursue their sports media coursework and internships in the heart of Phoenix—home to teams from all five major sports leagues, a Pac-12 university, college bowl games, PGA and LPGA tournaments, NASCAR and spring training headquarters for half of the teams in Major League Baseball.

The transition to university is exciting and sometimes intimidating, but Women Leaders in Sports Media members start (and finish!) their college careers supported by a community of leaders just like them.
