Cronkite Convocation

ASU proudly celebrates its undergraduate and graduate students’ graduation with both larger commencement events and school-specific convocation events. For information on the university’s graduation plans, go to graduation.asu.edu.

Spring 2022 Convocation information

The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication Spring 2022 convocation ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. at Arizona Federal Theatre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Graduates should arrive at 6:30 p.m. There will be signage directing graduates to the West entrance of Arizona Federal Theatre off of 5th Ave. The processional will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. Degree candidates’ names will be read as they cross the stage to receive personal congratulations from Dean Battinto L. Batts Jr. The ceremony will end at approximately 9 p.m.

Ceremony

Graduates will receive a name card when they check in for the convocation ceremony. Name cards contain the graduate’s name and contact information as entered in the MarchingOrder RSVP form. At the appropriate time during the ceremony, candidates will be asked to stand and proceed to the stage. As candidates approach the stage, they will hand their name card to the announcer. As each name is called, the candidate should walk across the stage and pose with Dean Batts. Graduates will be presented with a diploma folder as they leave the stage.

Venue policies

  • Clear bag policy will be strictly enforced
    • Clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags, maximum size: 12″ x 6″ x 12″
    • Small clutch bags approximately the size of a hand, maximum size: 4.5″ x 6.5″

    • Confetti/party favors (doubtful but clarifying anyways)
    • Selfie sticks
    • Large signs that could obstruct views
  • Please review the venue’s safety guidelines.

Personal cameras are allowed in the venue. Flash photography, video and removable lens cameras are not permitted without venue approval.

Directions and parking

Arizona Federal Theatre is located in Downtown Phoenix at 400 W. Washington St., Phoenix. Limited free parking is available for graduates and guests in the Adams Street Garage located at 401 W. Adams St., Phoenix on the north side of Adams St. between 4th and 5th avenues.

The garage will be clearly marked with balloons. Entrance to the parking garage states “Employee Parking Only” – see picture below. Access to the garage is available beginning at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10. Your patience is appreciated upon exit of the garage as all Cronkite Convocation graduates, guests, faculty and staff will be exiting the parking garage around the same time.

University commencement

The university undergraduate commencement ceremony will be held on Monday, May 9, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. on Frank Kush Field at Sun Devil Stadium on the ASU Tempe campus. The university graduate commencement ceremony will be held on Monday, May 9 at 9 a.m. at Desert Financial Arena on the ASU Tempe campus. ASU President Michael M. Crow will confer degrees upon graduating students at these ceremonies. For more information, visit the University’s Graduation Website.

Applying for graduation

Students planning to graduate in spring 2022 should apply for graduation before Feb 15. Visit the University Registrar Graduation Page for graduation application instructions. An additional $25 fee will be assessed for each additional concurrent degree. A late fee of $35 will be assessed to anyone applying after the Feb. 15 deadline.

*To be considered for Cronkite Convocation special student awards and to ensure your name appears in the Cronkite Convocation program, you must apply to graduate by the Feb. 15 graduation application deadline.

Diplomas

Diplomas are mailed approximately six to eight weeks after the degree conferral date to the home address on file with University Registrar Services. Please update your home address via MyASU prior to Commencement to ensure the delivery of your diploma.

Honor cords

If you are eligible for honors cords, the Registrar’s Office will automatically mail them to you. Please update your home address via MyASU to ensure the delivery of your honors cords.

Online RSVP

The MarchingOrder RSVP link will be available on the MyASU accounts of all students who have successfully applied for graduation. The registration site for spring 2022 in-person graduation events will be open the week of March 7.

Please note that changes to graduates’ personal information on the MarchingOrder form will apply only to this convocation ceremony. To make changes to permanent information with ASU, sign into MyASU.

Each student may RSVP for up to 8 guests. Guest tickets are available on Marching Order through your MyASU. Additional tickets will be released at a later date. Students will receive an email to request additional tickets.

Graduating students requiring special assistance

Students should indicate on the MarchingOrder RSVP form that special arrangements are needed and include a description of what kind of accommodation will be required. Students should also contact the Cronkite School Events team at csevents@asu.edu to further discuss the arrangements.

Guests requiring special assistance

Students should indicate on the MarchingOrder RSVP form the number of guests in need of special seating arrangements and a description of what kind of accommodation each guest will require. Also, Cronkite students, please contact the Cronkite School Events team at csevents@asu.edu to further discuss arrangements for any of your guests needing special assistance.

Caps and gowns

Graduates must wear official ASU caps and gowns during the commencement and convocation ceremonies. Tassels are worn on the right at convocation. Master’s candidates may wear their hoods. Cap and gown arrangements can be made through the ASU Bookstore. Students eligible for honor cords may pick them up at any Registrar’s Office. More information about honors eligibility may be found on the University’s Graduation Website.

Grad Fair

Graduates will be able to purchase everything they need for graduation such as caps, gowns, announcements, frames, class rings and more at the Spring 2022 Grad Fair Online, which will run from Friday, Feb. 11, at 8 a.m. MST to Friday, March 4, at 8 p.m. MST.

The Grad Fair Online is the only time when students can get a discount on graduation packages. Graduating students should have received an email on Friday, Feb. 11 with a unique link directing them to the Online Grad Fair.

Photography

ASU has contracted with Grad Images to take professional photographs of graduates backstage prior to the start of the ceremony and as they receive personal congratulations at the Cronkite School’s convocation ceremony. Graduates will receive a proof and price information from Grad Images approximately seven to ten days after graduation. There is no obligation to make a purchase.

Flowers

Leis and bouquets will be sold at the convocation ceremonies. Students and guests are encouraged to pre-order for pick up before the ceremony so they can wear their leis on stage and in pictures. To order, visit the Commencement Group pre-order page.
