Cronkite outstanding graduates fall 2020

Three of our outstanding graduates, who will be honored at Cronkite’s virtual Convocation ceremony on Monday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m., recently shared their personal stories of inspiration and their passion for journalism.

B. William Silcock

Silcock, affectionately known as "Dr. Bill," will retire after nearly 20 years at the Cronkite School, where he developed the school’s study abroad programs and cultivated a relationship with the U.S. State Department, which led to a series of grants that expanded the school’s footprint abroad and trained journalists from around the world.

Innovation Week

Five professors from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication will discuss investigative journalism, misinformation in the media and other topics during Arizona State University’s Innovation Week and Innovation Quarter.

New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet

Dean Baquet, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who is the first Black executive editor to lead both The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, will be honored on March 25.

Plate & Pour Takeout

The coronavirus may have rattled the world’s restaurant industry, but chefs and restaurateurs throughout Arizona aren’t throwing in the kitchen towel just yet. In fact, they’re reimagining innovative takeout menus, and Arizona PBS is highlighting those menus through a new digital-first mini-series starting Dec. 10.

Retha Hill, director of the New Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, has been named one of 12 winners and awarded a grant by the 2020 Online News Association’s (ONA) Journalism 360 Challenge.

The Cronkite School earned a total of five awards, the most of any school in the annual competition, and received top honors in three collegiate categories.

Farmworkers

The students partnered with Arizona Republic reporters to produce a series of stories about COVID-19’s outsized toll on some of the Southwest’s most vulnerable communities, including Native Americans, immigrants and refugees.

Barlett & Steele awards

The awards are named for the renowned investigative team of Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele, and sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

State of Emergency

Carnegie-Knight News21’s 2019 project, “State of Emergency,” won the 2020 Pro-Am Student Award for the Online Journalism Awards.

The Southwest Health Reporting Initiative at Cronkite News, which is funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is working to create more audio packages throughout the fall semester for both Native American and Spanish-speaking audiences.
