Apply for Scripps Howard Journalism Entrepreneurship Institute at Cronkite School

College journalism professors who want to introduce entrepreneurial concepts and practices into their courses are invited to apply for fellowships to attend the Scripps Howard Journalism Entrepreneurship Institute at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.The Cronkite School is accepting applicants for the sixth annual Scripps institute, a five-day boot camp that immerses journalism professors in the concepts and practices of entrepreneurship.The program will be held at the Cronkite School’s state-of-the-art journalism facility in downtown Phoenix from Jan. 3-7, 2017. The institute is made possible through a grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The E.W. Scripps Company.Cronkite Professor of Practice Dan Gillmor, an internationally known expert on new media and entrepreneurship, will lead the institute. Speakers and instructors will include entrepreneurs, investors and Cronkite faculty.“Our goal is to help journalism educators understand the startup culture and how to bring it to their students,” Gillmor said. “We’ve been fortunate to have great speakers — including entrepreneurs who have built their own digital media businesses — from the journalism, technology and education spheres.”The institute will offer a variety of interactive sessions on how to design a semester-long course in entrepreneurial journalism as well as how to integrate other disciplines into the teaching of entrepreneurial journalism. Fellows also will learn how to use grants, contests and challenges as teaching opportunities.The program is limited to 12 fellows, who will be competitively selected. Training, transportation, lodging, materials and meals will be provided. Fluency in new media is preferred but not required.To be considered, candidates must submit an online application, a statement of their interest, curriculum vitae or resume, and a letter from their dean or department chair indicating their school’s intention to teach journalism entrepreneurship within the following academic year.
