Cronkite Accepting Applicants for Scripps Howard Journalism Entrepreneurship Institute

Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Scripps Howard Foundation are offering fellowships to journalism professors across the country to empower them to teach media entrepreneurship courses.The Cronkite School is accepting applications for the fifth annual Scripps Howard Journalism Entrepreneurship Institute, a five-day boot camp, which immerses journalism professors in the concepts and practices of entrepreneurship.The fellowship program will be held at the Cronkite School’s state-of-the-art journalism facility in downtown Phoenix from Jan. 3-7, 2016. The institute is made possible through a grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The E.W. Scripps Company.Cronkite Professor of Practice Dan Gillmor, an internationally known speaker and thinker on new media and entrepreneurship, will lead the institute. He will be joined by entrepreneurs, investors and Cronkite faculty.“It’s increasingly important for journalists to understand and appreciate the startup culture, and the Scripps Howard Institute aims to help journalism educators bring that understanding to their students,” Gillmor said.The institute will offer a variety of interactive sessions that teach how to design a semester-long course in entrepreneurial journalism as well as how to integrate other disciplines into the entrepreneurial journalism teaching experience. Fellows also will receive training on how to use grants, contests and challenges as teaching opportunities.The program is limited to 12 fellows, who will be competitively selected. Training, transportation, lodging, materials and meals will be provided through the fellowship. Fluency in new media is preferred but not required.To be considered, candidates must submit an online application, a statement, their curriculum vitae or resume and a letter from their dean or department chair indicating their school’s plans to introduce a class in journalism entrepreneurship within the following academic year.
