Tom Feuer An Emmy-winning sports television executive is joining the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University to head its new Southern California sports program. Tom Feuer, a longtime FOX Sports executive producer, has been named a professor of practice and director of the Cronkite Sports bureau in Santa Monica, Calif. He will teach and supervise upper-level undergraduate and graduate multimedia journalism students creating sports-related television and digital content for professional media outlets. Feuer has more than 20 years of experience producing some of the world’s largest television sporting events, including nine Olympic Games. He is a three-time Emmy winner for production of the 2004 and 1988 Summer Olympic Games as well as the 1999 World Track and Field Championships. He also is a 22-time National Telly Award winner. “It is an honor and privilege to join the great faculty team at the Cronkite School,” Feuer said. “I am looking forward to working in Santa Monica to create a program that prepares our sports journalism students at the highest levels and becomes a magnet for enrollment across the country.” As director of the Cronkite Sports bureau, Feuer will work to develop partnerships with local and national television and digital sports networks, said Cronkite Assistant Dean Mark Lodato, who leads the school’s sports journalism program. “Tom brings national award-winning storytelling ability plus the Southern California contacts we need to build the premiere sports journalism experience in Southern California,” Lodato said. “He’s the perfect person to take this challenge head-on.” Most recently, Feuer served as executive producer of FOX Sports Net, annually supervising content production and execution on more than 800 sporting events, including packages on the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lakers and Angels. He also has worked for MSNBC, Turner Sports, ESPN and Nike. The Cronkite Sports bureau is part of the school’s new sports journalism program, which offers an array of courses, internships and professional programs for students interested in careers in sports journalism. Students in the program cover Major League Baseball’s Cactus League spring training for national media outlets, and this fall, they will report on news and events leading up to Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale, Ariz. The school plans to open another sports bureau in Phoenix in August where students will cover Arizona sports for professional outlets. The Santa Monica bureau is housed at the ASU California Center, a hub for student internships, research and professional opportunities. The center also houses Arizona Technology Enterprises, ASU’s exclusive intellectual property management and technology transfer organization that builds relationships with entrepreneurs, investors, companies and Southern California research universities. Other organizations co-located at the ASU California Center are the Arizona Commerce Authority and the California Chicano News Media Association. The bureau is the second professional newsroom Cronkite has established out-of-state; another news bureau in Washington, D.C., is home to students who spend a semester covering public policy issues in the nation’s capital for Arizona audiences. In addition, the school operates newsrooms in Phoenix that include Cronkite News Service, where students cover state government and public policy; the New Media Innovation Lab, where students develop digital products for media companies; a public relations lab, where students work with clients to develop campaigns; Cronkite NewsWatch, where students produce a nightly television newscast; and the Cronkite Public Insight Network bureau, where students provide a range of services to media outlets that help them connect with audiences.
