The Arizona Republic has established a memorial scholarship at Arizona State University in honor of the paper’s recently retired managing editor Jeffrey “Doz” Dozbaba. Dozbaba died at the age of 58 on his birthday, July 7, after battling lung cancer. He had worked at The Arizona Republic for 31 years, starting as a copy editor and ascending to sports editor, assistant manager editor, senior editor and managing editor for audience development. He retired from the paper in June 2009. The scholarship in Dozbaba’s name will help print journalism students further their education at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Dozbaba’s widow, Mary, will be involved in the annual selection of the recipient. The Arizona Republic has pledged to contribute $2,500 to the fund each year for five years and has invited its employees to make additional donations to the fund in Dozbaba’s memory. Randy Lovely, editor and vice president for news at The Arizona Republic, said the scholarship is an appropriate way to honor Dozbaba, who was remembered fondly by colleagues as a mentor to young journalists in the newsroom. “Jeff provided guidance and mentorship to many young journalists, so the scholarship established in his name is a fitting tribute to him,” Lovely said. “He believed in preparing each generation of journalists and gave generously of his time and expertise.” Cronkite Dean Christopher Callahan said the school was “deeply honored to help keep Jeff Dozbaba’s legacy alive through the Dozbaba Scholarship.” Donations to the Jeffrey Dozbaba Memorial Scholarship Fund can be sent to: Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication Arizona State University 555 N.
