The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University will host its second Cronkite New Media Academy this fall, offering professional training for those who want to learn new media skills. The academy will be held on 10 consecutive Saturdays, beginning Sept. 12 and ending Nov. 14. Participants learn how to design and develop a Web site, how to effectively present and edit photos for the Web, how to use social networking tools, how to create Web-based graphics, how to do podcasting and audio slideshows, and how to edit and use video on the Web. At the end of the 10-week program, participants have fully developed Web sites suitable for professional or personal use. Cronkite School Dean Christopher Callahan said the training is designed to help people understand how communication is changing and gives them the practical skills they need to use the Web effectively. “Our first academy this summer was so successful we decided to offer it again,” he said. “It’s clear that the school can offer a real service by providing this kind of training.” The first group attracted more than 25 individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds, from graphic artists and freelance writers to a newspaper editor and public relations professionals. The academy is held at the school’s new state-of-the-art building in downtown Phoenix. All sessions are taught by trained Cronkite School professionals in small digital media labs, with an emphasis on practical hands-on training.
