The Cronkite School will host the Shaufler Prize in Journalism Reception. The Shaufler Prize was established in 2021 by one of our generous donors, Paul Anderson, CEO & Principal of Workhouse Media, based in Seattle. Paul’s gift and creation of this national contest is in honor of his late friend, Ed Shaufler, who passed away in 2020. Paul and Ed shared a mutual and deep appreciation for the written word, particularly long-form journalism that tells the stories of underserved people in society. It is in that spirit that this contest, which is now in its second year, provides a national spotlight for the best journalism and journalists advancing the understanding of stories and issues related to communities of color, immigrants and the LGBTQIA+ population.
This month’s event will feature a catered reception in the First Amendment Forum, followed by an awards presentation with remarks from Paul Anderson and in-person panel discussion with this year’s winners and representatives from winning newsrooms, including:
- 1st Place – Aydali Campa, Cronkite graduate and reporter for Inside Climate News who won for “The Superfund Site Next Door”
- 2nd Place – Janeen Jones from the Center for Public Integrity for “The Wealth Vortex”
- 3rd Place – Susan Ferriss and Joe Yerardi from the Center for Public Integrity for “Cheated at Work”
Panelists
Aydali Campa, Reporter, Inside Climate News
Aydali Campa is a bilingual multimedia journalist from Arizona. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from Arizona State University, where her feature story about the unique issues faced by schools on the US-Mexico border won her a national and regional writing award. Prior to her current role, Campa taught elementary school in Oklahoma City for two years, an experience that later informed her local and national reporting on education. She pursued a master’s degree in investigative journalism, where she worked alongside her cohort to produce an award-winning multimedia investigation that explored the discrepancies in greenhouse gas emissions reports from oil and gas companies in the United States. Upon graduation, Campa was selected as a Roy W. Howard Investigative Fellow with Inside Climate News, where she now works as a Midwest reporter with a focus on environmental justice issues in the region. Her coverage can be seen in The Arizona Republic, The Wall Street Journal, Arizona PBS and the Associated Press.
Janeen Jones, Design Editor, Center for Public Integrity
Janeen Jones is the design editor for the Center for Public Integrity. Before joining the Center, she worked as a graphic designer at The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Chronicle of Philanthropy and POLITICO. She has also worked at various newspapers as a copy editor, reporter and news editor.
Susan Ferriss, formerly of the Center for Public Integrity
Susan Ferriss joined the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting last year as a senior editor guiding reporters worldwide. Before that she spent 10 years as an investigative journalist at the Center for Public Integrity. Her award-winning stories changed school policing policies at the state and national level that criminalize children, and she also exposed systemic abuse of immigrant workers and families. Susan was a staff reporter for the San Francisco Examiner, the Sacramento Bee, and spent a decade as a Mexico-Latin America correspondent for Cox Newspapers. Her series on Mexican economic reforms, “Broken Promises,” won Overseas Press Club honors and other awards. Her stories on immigrant food workers, COVID-19 and wage theft have also won multiple awards. She’s covered the border, conflict and war in South and Central America, and produced a documentary, The Golden Cage, and a book, The Fight in the Fields, both about farmworkers.
Joe Yerardi, Data Reporter, Center for Public Integrity
Joe Yerardi is a data reporter at the Center for Public Integrity, reporting on a broad range of topics. In this role, he combines traditional reporting techniques with data analysis, visualization and programming to tell investigative stories. His reporting has, among other honors, earned a Gerald Loeb Award for an investigation into the influence pharmaceutical companies wield over state Medicaid programs’ drug purchasing decisions and a Paul Tobenkin Memorial Award for an investigation into the vulnerability of migrant foodworkers to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before joining Public Integrity, Joe covered a wide range of beats as the data reporter at inewsource in San Diego, California, and as the data editor at the San Antonio Express-News.
