Practical Pitching: How to Be a Successful Freelancer
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to turn your great story ideas into published pieces.
Our experts will show you how to formulate a successful pitch based on research and a plan of action. And they’ll answer your practical questions: How do you find the right publication and the right editor for your piece? How many publications should you pitch to at a time? How long should you wait for an answer? What is a reasonable rate to charge?
Leading the workshop will be:
Fortesa Latifi is a feature reporter at Teen Vogue and a freelance writer who has had work published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Business Insider, among others. She is working on a book about what it’s like to be a chronically ill woman in America. She is a graduate of the Cronkite School, with a master’s degree in journalism and mass communication.
Kelly Vaughn is senior editor at Arizona Highways Magazine, where she is in charge of planning and assigning editorial content. She also serves as the magazine’s book editor and host of the podcast “Eat My Words,” which celebrates the people, ingredients and destinations that contribute to Arizona’s unique culinary culture. She teaches narrative writing as a faculty associate at the Cronkite School.
This workshop is open to all Cronkite students. Check with your Cronkite instructors about earning extra credit for your participation. No RSVP is required.
Please join us virtually if you are unable to attend in person.
