The Hearst Journalism Award

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program, known as the Pulitzer Prizes of collegiate journalism, were established by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation in 1960 to provide support, encouragement and assistance to journalism education at the college and university level.

Cronkite School students have led the nation in the Hearst Awards, the nation’s most prestigious collegiate journalism competition.

The Cronkite School has finished in the top 10 nationally in the Hearst Awards for the past 14 years, including first-place finishes for the 2008-2009 and 2006-2007 academic years and second-place finishes for the 2009-2010, 2005-2006 and 2004-2005 academic years. The overall standings combine all writing, photo, broadcast and multimedia scores.

Undergraduate students from accredited schools can compete for the awards; winners receive scholarships, and the students’ journalism schools receive matching grants. The program distributes up to $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
