Cronkite Professional Programs for Students

The Cronkite School’s professional programs give students the kind of professional experience most journalism students don’t gain until their first, second or even third jobs.

Students are encouraged to choose multiple programs from among the 15 different professional opportunities. They might spend one semester producing digital content for Cronkite News – Phoenix and another in Washington, D.C., covering national news for Arizona audiences. Or they might work in the Digital Audiences lab one semester and take their new audience engagement skills into the Public Relations Lab, where they develop campaigns for clients that range from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies.

Other students choose programs that prepare them up for careers in television, Spanish-language media, sports media, investigative reporting or innovation and entrepreneurship.

Students commit to at least two full days a week over the course of a semester. They work closely with professional faculty who have been hired for their expertise in their fields and their ability to edit, mentor and support students working in a professional environment. Students emerge with rich portfolios and experience that propel them into successful careers.

The most successful students do two, three and even four professional programs before they graduate, taking advantage of the wide range of opportunities. They recognize that having broad skills and knowledge will put them ahead in the rapidly changing fields of media and communications.

Requirements for programs vary. Students should discuss course options with their advisers, speak with faculty mentors about what professional programs they might want to consider, and visit the professional programs to see for themselves which might be the best fit.

Applications are accepted each mid-semester for the following semester. Students will be notified by email when the application period opens. With the exception of the New Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab, all professional programs are available in the summer as well as in the fall and spring semesters.

Cronkite News – Phoenix

Students report and produce stories from the Statehouse to the Mexico border for the Cronkite News nightly newscast, Cronkite News website and dozens of professional news outlets.

Cronkite News – Washington

Students spend a semester in the nation’s capital, covering stories important to Arizona audiences for the Cronkite News newscast and website as well as professional media outlets.

Cronkite News - LA

Broadcast and digital students cover news and sports stories across media platforms. Their work is published by Cronkite News and distributed to a wide variety of media outlets in and around Southern California.

Cronkite News — Phoenix Sports

Students in the Cronkite News sports bureau in Phoenix cover a wide range of sporting events, including MLB spring training, for major market news outlets across the country.

Cronkite News — Borderlands

Students cover important immigration and border issues in English and Spanish for Cronkite News under the guidance of two award-winning professional borderlands journalists.

Cronkite Noticias

Bilingual students work with professionals to create digital content for the Cronkite Noticias website, which serves Spanish-speaking audiences in Arizona.

Carnegie-Knight News21

Cronkite students work with other top journalism students from across the country to produce a data-rich, in-depth multimedia reporting project on a major national issue. Publication partners include The Washington Post, NBC News and other major national news organizations.

Digital Audiences Lab

In this immersive professional program, students define, grow and engage digital audiences for real clients in an agency-like setting.

Howard Center for Investigative Journalism

Students work on major regional and national investigations, developing their investigative reporting skills. The center partners with major national news organizations to publish projects.

New Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab

Students work in teams with computer engineering, design and business students to create new products and tell stories in new ways, using augmented reality and other cutting-edge tools.

Public Relations Lab

This strategic communications agency gives students experience developing campaigns and strategies for Fortune 500 companies, nonprofit organizations and other clients.

RWJF Health Reporting Initiative

Students report across platforms on health-related topics, with a focus on Latino, Native American and Spanish-speaking border communities in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Southern California and Texas. Content is distributed through Cronkite News.

Sports Knowledge Lab

Students in this lab, which is part of ASU’s Global Sport Institute, learn how to connect people to the power of sport by translating and amplifying complex sports research for global audiences.

TV Production and Graphics Lab

Students in the Television Production and Graphics Lab will work with Cronkite News and Arizona PBS to bring productions to life, learning all facets of control room production and what it takes to turn reporter content into a vibrant production.

TV Science Magazine

Students develop their DSLR video storytelling skills while producing the Arizona PBS program “Catalyst,” which features and explains a broad array of science research at ASU.
