The Cronkite School is inviting top-performing high school students to participate in summer camps focusing on sports broadcasting, broadcast and digital journalism and digital media innovation.
Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication is inviting high school students to participate in summer camps focusing on broadcast and digital journalism, sports broadcasting and digital media innovation.The Cronkite Institute for High School Journalism is offering three residential camps for high school students this summer. The camps include the Cronkite Sports Broadcast Boot Camp, Summer Journalism Institute and High School Media Innovation Camp.Students are housed at the Taylor Place residence hall on the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus and will live and work among other student journalists from across the U.S. The camps are taught by the Cronkite School’s award-winning faculty and leading journalism professionals across the region.“The Cronkite Institute for High School Journalism continues to grow every year and gives students a preview of what it’s like to be a college student at one of the country’s premiere journalism programs,” Cronkite Associate Dean Mark Lodato said. “We encourage people to apply soon as these programs fill up fast.”Applications for all three camps must be submitted by March 8 at 5 p.m. Below is more information on the three camps.The Cronkite Sports Broadcast Boot Camp (July 14-27) teaches students how to do play-by-play and sideline reporting, studio producing and live on-air reporting in the classroom and on the field. Students use the Cronkite School’s state-of-the-art equipment to create video stories from the field and in-studio sportscasts.Tuition includes housing, meals and transportation, as well as access to broadcast equipment, field trips and professional instruction. Under the guidance of award-winning Cronkite faculty and staff, students will also produce and direct a student newscast.The free program is made possible, in part, by the Arizona Broadcasters Association, RIESTER and generous alumni and friends of the school, including Tom Chauncey and Susan Karras. Selection for this camp is highly competitive. Students who are interested in participating in SJI can apply at https://cronkite.asu.edu/outreach/high-school-institute.The High School Media Innovation Camp (June 16-28) offers future journalists and game developers the chance to experiment with cutting-edge tools to learn how to develop digital projects.During the boot camp, students are paired with entrepreneurs, technologists, journalists and professors to create compelling content for digital audiences. At the end of the camp, students pitch their creations and ideas to a panel of judges and the winners are given the opportunity to continue working with professionals at ASU, The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com or the USA Today Network.The camp is free to selected participants thanks to The Arizona Republic’s Media in Education program, which is funded by subscribers who donate the value of their subscription during vacations or other temporary stoppages.
