Spring break may be canceled because of the pandemic but the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication has figured out a way for students to still take a fun break from the mid-semester stress.
“The Week Formerly Known as Spring Break” kicks off Monday, March 8 and offers special activities every day through Friday, March 12.
The events were hatched by Mary Cook, director of Student Success, and Melanie Alvarez, assistant dean, to try to provide respite for students who are feeling the stress.
“We know that not having spring break is difficult so come out and have some fun with us!” said Cook. “Basketball, Coach Edwards, free stuff, ice cream and puppies! What more could you ask for?”
Said Alvarez: “We hope Cronkite students will get outdoors to safely connect and find a new reason to smile.”
Here is the list of activities:
Monday, March 8, 5-6 p.m.
Cronkite is teaming up with Sun Devil Fitness and Wellness to get some Pre-March Madness action on our Downtown Phoenix Campus courts. Drop in for some well-distanced basketball tourneys and cornhole matches.

Build Your Own Wellness Kit
Wednesday, March 10, 2-4 p.m.
Cronkite has its virtual Wellness Wednesday series, but here’s your chance to bring a bag of some good, healthy vibes back home with you! From snacks and crafts to bath bombs and stress balls, build your own wellness kit at Taylor Mall.
Cronkite Ice Cream Social
Thursday, March 11, 2-3 p.m.
We all “screamed” for ice cream at our social last fall, so we’re bringing back this sweet treat classic! Stop in the Cronkite lobby to pick up your ice cream or sorbet of choice, then chill outside along Taylor Mall with your classmates.

Friday, March 12, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Sometimes the only friend that can help is a four-legged one. Cronkite is working with Sun Devil Paws Therapy to bring some furry friends for some much-needed pets and cuddles. Drop by the pop-up park just north of Taylor Place. Masks are required for interaction with therapy dogs.
