Recent college graduates are taking part in an intensive media sales boot camp sponsored by the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation and Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
The NABEF’s Media Sales Institute is an all-expenses-paid, weeklong residential seminar designed to prepare recent graduates for careers in media sales. Eighteen graduates from 13 universities are participating in the June 6-13 seminar, during which they learn about radio, television cable, print digital and internet sales from industry experts. Sessions cover media research, customer needs analysis and developing integrated media campaigns, among other topics.
Participants also are able to interview with industry leaders from national and regional media companies. Major media companies represented at this year’s institute include Cox Media, Meredith Corp., Scripps and Sinclair Broadcast Group.
“The NABEF Media Sales Institute at Arizona State University has a proven track record of preparing aspiring media sales professionals for jobs in broadcasting,” said NABEF President Marcellus Alexander. “The commitment of Cronkite leadership and faculty, combined with the intensive training this unique program provides, continues to develop candidates for rewarding sales careers.”
ASU is one of three institutions, alongside Florida A&M University and Howard University, to host the annual training. This is the fourth year the program is being held at the Cronkite School. MSI is supported by the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters, Patrick Communication and TEGNA Foundation.
“We are thrilled to host the Media Sales Institute for the fourth year in a row,” said Cronkite Associate Dean Mark Lodato, who leads the institute. “The opportunities recent grads receive through this program give them a major leg up on their peers in finding jobs in media sales, and our media partners appreciate the top-tier talent they find from the institute.”
NABEF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reinforcing the future of broadcasting through a commitment to education and to advancing excellence in the diversity and community service efforts in the industry. The NAB is a trade association that advocates on behalf of more than 17,000 free, local radio and television stations and broadcast networks before Congress, the Federal Communications Commission and the courts.
