First Amendment Coalition of Arizona Panel Discussion

Attend a panel discussion on the effect of a new rule on the use of mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets and laptops, in Arizona state courtrooms for emailing, texting and live-tweeting.

The discussion is sponsored by the First Amendment Coalition of Arizona, a consortium of the state's news media and open-government advocates, and is funded from a grant from the National Freedom of Information Coalition.

The moderator is Phoenix media law attorney David J. Bodney, partner at Ballard Spahr LLP and president of the Cronkite Endowment Board of Trustees.

The panelists include:

  • Arizona Supreme Court Justice Robert Brutinel
  • Maricopa County Superior Court Criminal Presiding Judge Joseph Welty
  • Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery
  • Phoenix criminal law attorney Jennifer Willmott, who has represented murder defendant Jodi Arias
  • KVOA-TV (Channel 4-Tucson) news director Cathie Batbie

The event is Friday morning, Oct. 17, and begins with a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. The discussion will focus on the new rule as well as changes to the existing Rule 122, which covers video and audio recording in state courtrooms.
