Symbiosis: Cross-border narrative journalism training

Gatopardo magazine and the Cronkite School present Symbiosis: Tradecraft Periodístico, a space for collaboration, professional development, and on-the-ground reporting directed at talented young journalists in the Americas. Together, Gatopardo’s editorial team and Cronkite’s world class faculty have developed a first-of-its-kind annual program made up of public conversations, specialized workshops and on-site residencies. By helping young journalists develop the skills they need to tell our region’s most urgent stories, the program will deepen understanding of shared challenges related to the environment, racial equity, human rights, democracy, and social justice.

The 2021-2022 edition of Symbiosis will include three phases:

  1. Public conversations: A series of eight public conversations with leading journalists from the U.S. and Latin America, broadcast on Wednesday evenings from Oct.13 – Dec. 1 and archived for future reference.  These conversations will focus on the practice of narrative journalism on topics including the environment, racial equity, and social justice, exploring, for example, the differences between extractive and responsible journalism and how to ethically represent people in all their complexity.
  2. Workshop: An interactive workshop on narrative journalism, which will equip students with technical skills and provide them individualized feedback from instructors with diverse backgrounds. Held spring 2022.
  3. Residencies: In-the-field training and reporting based out of Gatopardo facilities in the Yucatán Peninsula. These residencies offer select participants the opportunity to carry out a reporting project under the guidance of experts. Held summer 2022.
