The Public Insight Network, created and managed by American Public Media, is a community engagement platform that increases public participation in news gathering and encourages journalistic collaboration.
More than 215,000 people across the country have signed up through PIN to share their knowledge and insights with newsrooms. Journalists reach out to those sources to ask questions, test hunches, unearth angles and find sources for stories.
Unlike other source databases for journalists, PIN is not exclusively for people with advanced degrees in specific subjects or people often featured in news coverage. The idea is that everyone is an expert in his or her own experience, and everyone has insights to share. Tapping into this range of experiences and insights allows journalists to produce news coverage that is more relevant, inclusive and meaningful. It also gives members of communities a stronger voice in the media and the democratic process.
