BA Requirements
The undergraduate major in Journalism and Mass Communication consists of 40 semester hours of credit in the Cronkite School:
- 1 credit JMC 101 Grammar for Journalists or JMC 194 Freshman Seminar
- For non-freshmen 1 credit JMC 101 Grammar for Journalists OR a grade of at least 82% on the Cronkite School’s English grammar exam.
12 credits (four courses) in these foundations and core values classes
- JMC 110 Principles and History of Journalism
- JMC 366 Journalism Ethics and Diversity
- JMC 402 Mass Communication Law
- JMC 473 Business and Future of Journalism OR JMC 494 Public Relations: Research for students planning to enroll in JMC 417 Public Relations Campaigns

CRONKITE SCHOOL GENERAL STUDIES REQUIREMENTS (80 credits)
6 credits English Composition (ENG 101 AND ENG 102 OR ENG 107 AND ENG 108 OR ENG 105 and any elective)
3 credits English Literature
3 credits Philosophy (PHI 101 or 103 or 105 or 305 or 306)
6 credits History (one U.S. History class and one additional HST class)
3 credits American Government (POS 110 or 310)
3 credits Psychology (PGS 101)
3 credits Sociology (SOC 101)
3 credits Economics (ECN 211 or 212)
3 credits of Math (MAT 142)
3 credits Statistics (STP 220 or STP 226 or SOC 390 or JUS 302 or SWU 321) (fulfills the university’s computer science requirement)
8 credits Natural Sciences (one must be Quantitative SQ, second may be SQ or SG)
0-16 credits Non-English language—completion of the intermediate (202) level of proficiency
12 credits Related area—courses in one subject area outside of the Cronkite School. Examples include Communication, Business, Political Science, History and Fine Arts. These courses must be approved by a Cronkite School adviser.
7-23 credits Electives

To be eligible to enroll in JMC courses at the 200 level or above, a Cronkite School student must maintain a minimum 2.5 ASU GPA AND have successfully completed JMC 101 Grammar for Journalists or passed the English Grammar Exam Test administered by the Cronkite School.

Undergraduate Program Advisers
The Cronkite School is proud to have engaged and graduated many successful Barrett Honors College students since 1988. Sections of a number of JMC courses have been reserved exclusively for Honors College students. In addition, both semesters of The Human Event complete Humanities requirements in the Journalism and Mass Communication curriculum. HON 171 satisfies the English literature requirement and HON 272 satisfies the philosophy requirement.
