PBS Airs Primetime Special Featuring Cronkite Students TV News StoriesMay 16, 2007 A 30-minute primetime special on Eight/KAET, Arizona’s public television station, showcased the work of advanced TV news students at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. “The Best of Cronkite NewsWatch” featured award-winning stories from the past year that aired on the school’s student-produced evening newscast. Many of the stories featured on the May 15 special helped the Cronkite School win first place in the prestigious Hearst broadcast journalism awards for the third time in four years. The show included segments from Cronkite NewsWatch’s three hours of live election night coverage, reports from Mexico on Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano’s meetings with the new president, an in-depth feature on victims of polygamy in Colorado City, Ariz., stories from the state Legislature and an examination of border enforcement in Yuma, Ariz. The special was anchored by Cronkite alumnus and FOX10 anchor John Hook from the Cronkite NewsWatch studio at Eight/KAET, which is adjacent to the Cronkite School on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University. Greg Giczi, general manager of Eight/KAET, conceived of the idea for the annual showcase special, which started last year. “It was an honor for Eight, Arizona PBS, to present this program, which showcases the work of students from one of the best journalism schools in the country," Giczi said. Cronkite Dean Christopher Callahan applauded the students, faculty and KAET. “I continue to be amazed by the extraordinary quality of our students’ work. There is a reason why Hearst, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Broadcast Education Association and others continue to honor their work as the best in the nation,” Callahan said. “And we are extremely grateful to our friends at Eight/KAET for highlighting our students’ work. This is powerful exposure that is unprecedented in journalism education, and another example of our great partnership with Eight.” Cronkite NewsWatch is led by Mark Lodato, the school’s TV news director in Tempe, Sue Green, broadcast director of Cronkite News Service in Phoenix, and TV production manager Jim Rush. Eight, which is operated by ASU, is one of the largest PBS stations in the country with 1.3 million weekly viewers.
