Shooting and Editing Video

In this two-and-a-half-day workshop, you’ll learn how to shoot better video and edit using the Final Cut Pro editing system. We’ll help you improve your storytelling techniques and cover the technical aspects of video, including basic lighting, audio, shooting and using effects as well as editing and trimming. You’ll be able to use a video camera provided by the Cronkite School for this hands-on course.

“Shooting and Editing Video” is taught by Jim Jacoby, producer and lecturer at the Cronkite School, and an Apple-certified instructor. Jacoby joined the Cronkite faculty in 2008 after 20 years in television news. An Emmy award-winning editor and director, Jacoby teaches television production and serves as the school’s production manager. In addition to his Cronkite School duties, he works as a freelance editor and does graphics for the Arizona Cardinals, Sun Devil Football and several local production companies. He is certified in Final Cut Pro.

  • Day One: Shooting Video. You’ll be introduced to the best techniques for shooting video and learn the basics of good videography — framing, lighting and aesthetics — as well as how to record quality audio. We’ll also look at storytelling techniques and how to shoot sequences and b-roll to help advance your stories. You’ll have time to go out with a camera and shoot video to use on day two of the workshop.
  • Day Two: Editing. You’ll be introduced to non-linear editing and the Final Cut Pro editing system as you import the footage you’ve shot, log it and start placing in a timeline to edit. You’ll learn how to use transitions, work with still images and add titles and effects to video.
  • Day Three: Compression/Wrapping Up. During this half-day, you’ll finish your editing projects and learn how to compress your video in several ways and how to upload to your website and YouTube or Vimeo accounts.
