Social Media for Professionals
Making Social Media Work for You
This two-day training is designed to teach how social media is changing the way we communicate and how to use social media tools effectively.
“Social Media for Professionals” is taught by Assistant Professor Dawn Gilpin, who teaches social media and public relations research at the Cronkite School. Gilpin spent more than 15 years working in Italy in organizational communication and public relations. She has developed and taught numerous workshops on topics ranging from strategic uses of social media to crisis communication and management.
- Day One: Introduction to Networking. What do we mean by social media? You will create and use various social media accounts, including Twitter and Delicious, and learn how the cultures of different platforms vary. You’ll learn to re-tweet, use hashtags, share knowledge and build audience and reputation.
- Day Two: Advanced Networking. You will be introduced to visual social media sites, such as YouTube and Flickr, and learn about the growing importance of curation in building a professional brand. You’ll learn to live-tweet events, post images and embed video using a personal Tumblr multimedia account. And we’ll cover the pros and cons of cross-platform communication and the strategic use of search engine optimization (SEO) to best connect with key audiences.
