Creating Your Website

In this workshop you’ll learn how to set up and customize a website, how to effectively present and edit photos for the Web, how to do audio slideshows and how to edit and use video on the Web.

“Creating Your Website” is taught by Nic Lindh, the Cronkite School's Web master and instructional technology analyst. He has worked on the Web since the 1990s and created the Cronkite School’s website as well as the website for Cronkite News.

Here’s what you'll learn in the “Creating Your Website” workshop:

• First Saturday: What can Your Website Do for You? You’ll learn about Content Management Systems and how to set up a WordPress page. You’ll be introduced to basic HTML and social media tools, and you’ll learn how to create a blog post.
• Second Saturday: Photos for the Web. You’ll learn what makes a good photo, and you’ll get practice shooting photos. You’ll get an introduction to Photoshop and learn how to edit your photos and upload images.
• Third Saturday: Video and Sound on the Web. You’ll learn the elements of making a good video and capturing sound, then you’ll shoot your own footage on Handycams. You’ll be introduced to iMovie and learn to edit using your own video.
• Fourth Saturday: Video and Slideshows. You’ll create Vimeo or YouTube accounts and learn to upload video and embed video in blog posts. You’ll also be introduced to slideshows and learn how to create a slideshow, write a voiceover, write a blog post and embed your slideshow.
• Fifth Saturday: Design and Moving Forward. We’ll cover how to purchase a domain name, how Web hosting works and basic design and typography for your website. You’ll learn how to use themes and plugins to customize your WordPress account, and we’ll discuss how to set and measure goals for your website.

Five consecutive Saturdays, April 21 to May 19.
