The Cronkite School offers students an intensive and interactive professional education. Whether students specialize in newspapers, magazines, television, radio, online or public relations, they receive top-flight instruction from some of the brightest minds in the field and participate in unparalleled professional opportunities prior to embarking on careers in the media industry.

While state funding and tuition cover much of the costs of the Cronkite School’s curriculum and staffing, private philanthropy plays a major role. It is private philanthropy that will enable us to accomplish our vision: To become the best professional journalism program in the country.

Donations enable the Cronkite School to provide its students with:

Unique, in-depth educational opportunities. Some of the most exciting and beneficial instruction at the Cronkite School takes place outside the traditional classroom. For example:

• ASU NewsWatch, the school’s award-winning television news show that airs on area cable TV, gives students the opportunity to produce their own newscast on deadline. Students serve as the show’s anchors, reporters, producers, directors, editors and videographers.
• Since 2004, students have traveled to Mexico to produce journalism projects documenting various subjects such as families separated by the border, children of the borderlands and the economical ties between Mexico and the U.S. These journalism projects included photo essays, magazines, special edition newspapers, broadcast reports and Web sites.
• The Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship teaches entrepreneurial thinking and skills to a cross-section of students majoring in journalism, computer engineering, design and business. Students also work individually with the Center’s director to develop their own innovative digital media products and services.

Continued program expansion. Dean Christopher Callahan envisions the best professional journalism program in the West. To achieve that vision, the school needs to continue to expand its programs and hire additional faculty members. Current initiatives include programs in journalism ethics, coverage of Latino issues, media management, health sciences journalism and business journalism.

State-of-the-art equipment. Cronkite students are trained to operate the most up-to-date as well as the most commonly used journalism equipment. By constantly upgrading its equipment and training students on the newest technologies, the Cronkite School ensures students an education that will make them highly employable.

Significant scholarship funds. Each year, dozens of students receive a total of $100,000-plus in scholarship funds. Since many Cronkite students work during the academic year to help finance their education, it is a continuing priority for the school to provide much-needed scholarship funds so students can immerse themselves in their media studies and take full advantage of the many extraordinary media-related opportunities provided to them by the school.
