Associate Professor Fran R. Matera

Fran Matera joined the Cronkite School’s faculty in 1989 after teaching at Florida International University and the University of Miami. She teaches writing for public relations, radio and television writing, news writing and media ethics.

For her leadership as faculty adviser to the ASU student chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), she won the Chapter Faculty Adviser award from the PRSSA Rocky Mountain District 1990-1991.

Her research, focusing on Hispanic audiences and conducted in both English and Spanish, appeared in American Journalism, Journalism Quarterly, The International Journal of Intercultural Relations and Communication Research Reports.

Matera’s experience includes three years as a copy editor and night copy chief at The Miami News, editor of a fine arts magazine, account executive at two Miami public relations agencies and editorial assistant on four mass-market biographies.

Her doctorate in educational administration from the University of Miami focused on organizational analysis. She holds a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in communication.

Her background reflects a love of music. She studied voice, specifically opera, for seven years and advises hosts for a classical music station.
