Professor Frederic

Frederic “Fritz” Leigh received his bachelor’s degree in radio/TV/film from the University of South Dakota and his master’s from the University of Iowa. His responsibilities in the Cronkite School include student services administration, faculty associate coordination, academic scheduling, equipment/space management and supervision of KASC, the school’s campus radio station.

Leigh received his doctorate in higher education administration from Arizona State University in 1989.

He took his first professional position as program director for a proposed FM station in Omaha, Neb. in 1970. While laying the groundwork for KVNO, which went on the air in 1972 at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he taught a variety of broadcasting courses. Leigh became general manager of the station in 1976 and developed it to its current status as a full-service fine arts radio outlet for metropolitan Omaha.

In 1979, as ASU began to plan for a campus radio station, Leigh accepted the position of station manager. He also was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Journalism and Telecommunication the same year.

Leigh initiated an ASU campus radio station, then KASR, in 1982. The station since has changed call letters to KASC, The Blaze.

Leigh was the first associate director of the Cronkite School from 1987 to 2005 when he was appointed associate dean. He teaches a survey course in electronic media.

He was selected outstanding professor by ASU’s Golden Key National Honor Society. Leigh is the author of numerous journal articles and several book chapters. He co-authored the textbook “Electronic Media (Radio/TV/Film Series)” and co-edited “Historical Dictionary of American Radio.” Leigh served two terms on the board of directors of the Broadcast Education Association.
