She is a regular contributor to Latino Perspectives Magazine and previously wrote an award-winning monthly parenting column for Los Angeles Magazine. She also anchored a morning news show and co-hosted an afternoon women’s talk show at KCBS-TV in Los Angeles. SUSAN GREEN is the broadcast director of the Cronkite News Service in the Cronkite School. She was previously managing editor at KNXV-TV in Phoenix and held executive producer positions at KPNX-TV in Phoenix, at WUSA in Washington, D.C. and WABC-TV in New York City. She wrote and produced a Telly Award-nominated A&E documentary and is the recipient of a Peabody Award for WABC’s coverage of the events of Sept. 11, 2001. ELLEN SOETEBER is an award-winning journalist and former top editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch who is now the Edith Kinney Gaylord Visiting Professor in Journalism Ethics at the Cronkite School. She is the only woman to hold the top editing position at the Post-Dispatch in its 129-year history and one of a small number of women ever to lead a Top 30 major metropolitan newspaper. JULIA WALLACE is the first female editor of The Atlanta Journal Constitution, the paper at which she started as an intern 25 years ago. She was managing editor of The Arizona Republic from 1999-2001. Wallace also served as editor of The Statesman Journal newspaper in Salem, Ore., and worked as a reporter and editor at the Virginian Pilot-Ledger Star, USA Today and the Chicago Sun-Times. Jane Pauley to Receive Cronkite Award for Journalism Excellence Monday, November 12, 2007 • 11:30 a.m. Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa Jane Pauley, the long-time popular anchor of NBC’s “Today” show and founding co-host of “Dateline NBC,” will be the 25th recipient of the prestigious Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism. The annual award is presented at the Cronkite Luncheon, one of the biggest events in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Each year, more than 1,000 media leaders, business executives, politicians, civic leaders and Cronkite School supporters join Cronkite students and faculty for the presentation of the award. Beyond Web 2.0: If you thought new technology was Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007 • 3:15 p.m. Stauffer Hall, Room A237 Alan Mutter has held senior reporting and editing positions at the Chicago Sun-Times and San Francisco Chronicle, was chief operating officer of a national cable television company and served as chief executive officer of three Silicon Valley startups focused on broadband delivery and online media technology. Working most recently as a consultant, Mutter advised a leading Japanese company on mobile media and technology and a major newspaper publisher on new media strategy. He also has been an investor, director and adviser to more than a dozen startup companies focused on new media technologies, new content paradigms and new business models. For the past two years, Mutter has written a widely quoted commentary on the technological developments in the media industry called “Reflections of a Newsosaur.” He’s an affiliate of the Media Management Institute of Northwestern University and teaches journalism as a volunteer to disadvantaged youth in San Francisco. Hearst Visiting Professional to Discuss Immigration Coverage Monday, Sept. 10, 2007 • 11:30 a.m. Stauffer Hall, Reading Room Susan Carroll, immigration reporter for the Houston Chronicle, will discuss immigration coverage in the mainstream media for Cronkite faculty, staff and alumni. Carroll is coming to the school under the Hearst Visiting Professional program, which is funded by a grant from the William R. Hearst Foundation to bring leading journalists to the school to share their expertise. Carroll covered immigration issues in Tucson and Phoenix before moving to the Chronicle last year. Arizona State University Hosts Reynolds Institute June 17-29, 2007 The Cronkite School will host one of three Reynolds Institutes this summer. The Reynolds Institutes provide high school journalism teachers with intensive two-week newspaper training programs. Shepard will discuss her book, “Woodward and Bernstein: Life in the Shadow of Watergate.” Shepard teaches journalism at American University. She was a Times Mirror Visiting Professor at University of Texas at Austin for the 2005-2006 academic year where she taught a class she designed on Watergate and the Press. She spent the last four years interviewing more than 175 people connected to Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein and sifting through the new archival materials that UT bought from Woodward and Bernstein for $5 million in 2003. For nearly a decade Shepard wrote for American Journalism Review on such things as ethics and the newspaper industry. Brown was anchor and managing editor of NewsNight on CNN from 2001 to November 2006. His 30-year career includes coverage of the Vietnam protests, Watergate and the beginning of the Iraq war. He is probably best remembered for his coverage of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. On the air one-half hour after the first attack on the World Trade Center, Brown delivered his broadcast from a rooftop in lower Manhattan. His coverage has been called courageous, calming and insightful. Brown has more than 25 years of experience in journalism and was most recently CNN's lead anchor during breaking news. As an anchor for ABC's World News Tonight Saturday, Brown reported for World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Nightline and other ABC News shows. One of the key points of Brown's career was his coverage of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks from Ground Zero and the areas surrounding the remains of the World Trade Center in New York City. The annual award presentation event, the Cronkite Luncheon, has grown into one of the biggest events in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Each year about 1,000 media leaders, business executives, politicians, civic leaders and Cronkite School supporters join Cronkite students and faculty for the presentation of the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism. The recipient list reads like a Who's Who of the media world: Ted Turner, Bob Woodward, Bill Moyers, Katharine Graham, George Will, Helen Thomas, Ben Bradlee, and many others. Last year's recipient was Dave Barry, the Pulitzer Prize-winning humor columnist.
